Campin Out!
MY LITTLE TOWN by Pattie M.
This is my neighborhood and welcome to it! It extends from West Boulevard in Cleveland to Cove Avenue in Lakewood, north to Edgewater Drive and south to Detroit Road. Gay-By-the-Bay and don't we love it! Beautiful, a walking distance to anywhere on a clear day and a feeling of safety if only from our sheer numbers. You see us everywhere!
We're outside Jack the Dipper (what's in a name, huh?), better known as "that yogurt shop on Clifton," shoveling in calories. There's Pappa Nick's for the best Italian this side of Little Italy. And don't forget Clifton Web with its full range tchotchke: from posters to x-rated wind-up everything. There's clothing, jewelry, ceramics, calendars, and an entire section of adult cards not suitable for mom. Run by Gary "Buy-3-Get-One-Free" Levey, the Web is a great last minute stop off for a quick remembrance. (By the way, supporting the Web is not supporting the gay community -they don't even carry this paper but's it's a fun place nonetheless.
So, if the "Bay" is the westside's Gay burg, then City Hall would most surely be Scoops & Ladles. Gracious hosts Barry & Richard co-
own and operate this friendly little restaurant. Ambiance is homey, expecially if you're from southeastern Pennsylvania, since the walls are a Three-Mile Island green. Original artworks from local master Richard Greenwell grace the nuclear walls. Service from senior waitrons Gary & Brian is excellent. There's always a table to drop in on to discuss Lynn Lavner's recent show or who's doing who/what. And if you don't see someone you know at Scoops, then honey you just better seek some help for that agoraphobia and get out of the house more often!

If it's keeping the gay dollar within the community you want, then it's off to southwest Lakewood Homo Heights, as it were to Another State of Mind. ASM is a gay/lesbian bookstore that openly welcomes all gay men, women and supportive friends. Books, albums tapes, hand-crafted silver jewelry and original airbrushed T-shirts and sweatshirts. What can't be bought can be ordered, and probably in ample time for Christmas/Chanukah gift giving. There's a cup of tea, a hug and great conversation to be had things I just can't seem to find on the store directory at Hornes.
Heading back east again, there's time to stop at the Cleveland Shoppe for all your costume needs -be it everyday, drag or holiday wear. Owner Maureen with canine pal Jazz keeps plenty of vintage, military, punk & new .age clothing, jewelry and accessories on hand. "Mo" accepts consignment, too, if you're wondering what to do with last year's tiara!
Dukakis sees urgency
During several AIDS-related briefings and public appearances last month, potential first lady Kitty Dukakis reiterated her husband's commitment to sound and effective federal AIDS policies.
In early September, Mrs. Dukakis began her initiative by participating in an educational AIDS briefing in San Francisco with doctors, health professionals and people with AIDS (PWAS).
"Until the federal government begins to focus on this epidemic, we will have large numbers dying of AIDS," she said after the meeting, adding that mounting AIDS death tolls

"unacceptable and morally wrong". She met later with organizers of San Francisco's Project Open Hand, which delivers about 450 meals daily to PWAS in the San Francisco area. She then lent a hand by delivering boxed lunches and speaking with PWAS.
Project Open Hand's Martin Delaney commented after her visit that "not only did she understand the issues, she understands the urgency of the issues. We've never seen that in the ReaganBush administration."
